The School of Marine and Bioengineering at Yancheng Institute of Technology originated from the Department of Marine Engineering, established in 1996. In 2004, the Department of Marine Engineering merged with the Department of Chemical Engineering to form the School of Chemical and Bioengineering. In January 2015, to align with the national strategy of "Jiangsu Coastal Development," the School of Marine and Bioengineering was independently established.
The school consists of three departments: Marine Technology, Bioengineering, and Food Science and Engineering. It offers three first-level disciplines: Aquaculture, Bioengineering, and Food Science and Engineering. The school provides seven undergraduate majors (directions): Marine Science, Marine Technology, Aquatic Animal Medicine, Bioengineering, Food Science and Engineering, Food Quality and Safety, and Agronomy (not currently enrolling students). Among these, the Marine Technology was selected as a provincial first-class undergraduate major in 2019, while the Food Science and Engineering was selected as a provincial first-class undergraduate major in 2021 and a national first-class undergraduate major in 2022. In 2023, it was approved as a Jiangsu Province Excellence Engineer Education and Training Plan 2.0 program.
The school has two master's degree authorization majors (Biology and Medicine, Food and Nutrition), one provincial key construction discipline (Bioengineering), and one university-level key construction discipline (Aquaculture). The school boasts 11 teaching and research platforms, including the Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory for Exploration and Utilization of Marine Wetland Biological Resources, Jiangsu Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center (Marine Bioengineering Practice Education Center), Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Coastal Pond Aquaculture Ecology, Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Tidal Flat Benthic Biology, Jiangsu Provincial Coastal Pond Aquaculture Fish Feed Engineering Technology Research Center, and Yancheng Coastal Aquaculture Public Technology Service Center.
The school has 71 faculty members, including 60 full-time teachers, 3 administrative staff, 5 ideological and political teachers (counselors), and 4 laboratory personnel. Among the full-time teachers, 27 (44%) hold senior titles, including 14 professors (23%) and 10 associate professors (21%). 57 teachers (95%) hold doctoral degrees. The faculty includes 27 members of various talent cultivation programs such as the Provincial 333 High-level Talent Program, Provincial Innovation Doctors, and Provincial Deputy Chief Technology Officers. The school has one provincial excellent teaching team and one provincial "Outstanding Female Teacher" recognition. 22 teachers have overseas research experience, and 31 teachers serve as master's supervisors at universities such as Yancheng Institute of Technology, Jiangsu University, and Nanjing Agricultural University.
In the past three years, the school has secured nearly 60 provincial and ministerial-level research projects, including 12 National Natural Science Foundation projects. The total research funding amounts to 27 million yuan. Faculty members have published over 160 journal articles, including more than 140 SCI-indexed papers. They have applied for 180 invention patents, with nearly 20 patents granted, and received 4 provincial and ministerial-level research awards.
The school ranks among the top in YCIT in terms of graduate school admission rates and employment rates. From 2018 to 2024, the graduate school admission rates were 25.5%, 27.5%, 32.5%, 42.5%, 45.9%, 42.4%, 40%, and 48% respectively. The admission rate has remained stable above 40% for five consecutive years, and the school has been recognized as “outstanding team” in graduate school admissions and employment for eight consecutive years.
The school's excellent teaching and research conditions, along with its outstanding faculty, ensure high-quality talent cultivation and high-level development. The School of Marine and Biological Engineering is forging ahead to cultivate high-quality applied talents to meet the needs of the marine biological industry. The school strives to achieve its "14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025)" construction goals and better serve the development of Jiangsu's coastal areas.
